Technical Diving in Skarnsundet, Norway
Built around the objective – not the depth number
Skarnsundet offers steep terrain, tidal movement and cold-water coral habitats extending below recreational limits. Technical diving here requires precise timing, disciplined teams, suitable thermal protection and a gas plan designed for the actual profile. Bare Dykk supports trained open-circuit and rebreather divers with local planning, boat operations, accommodation, gas filling and equipment logistics.
The diving environment
Depending on conditions and the experience of the team, technical dives may include:
- Deep walls and slopes
- Current-exposed terrain
- Cold-water coral habitats
- Sea-tree and fan-coral locations
- Deeper stony-coral structures
- Long runtimes and staged decompression
- DPV-supported exploration
- Photography and documentation projects
Specific locations are selected according to tide, weather, team capability and the objective of the trip. Depth, runtime and gas strategy are planned individually for each dive. Every dive must remain within the certification, recent experience and agreed operational limits of the participating divers.
Certification and experience
Divers must hold training appropriate to the planned dive. Depending on the program, this may include:
- Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures or equivalent
- Helitrox or trimix certification
- CCR certification for the unit being used
- DPV training or documented relevant experience
- Drysuit training and recent cold-water experience
Divers should also demonstrate stable buoyancy and trim, controlled ascents, reliable gas-sharing, team awareness, DSMB deployment, familiarity with their equipment and appropriate bailout and decompression planning. We may request certification details, recent dive history and the intended configuration before accepting a booking.
Dive planning
Technical plans are prepared in consultation with the team. We review objective and location, maximum planned depth, bottom time and runtime, breathing and decompression gases, gas reserves, team size and roles, exposure and thermal protection, current and tidal window, entry/exit and boat pickup, and lost-team and aborted-dive procedures.
A guide or local support diver does not extend the certification or experience limits of visiting divers.
Number of dives
Technical diving follows a different rhythm from shorter recreational dives. Most technical programs are planned around one main dive per day, allowing time for gas preparation, equipment checks, boat and site logistics, long runtimes, decompression, surface recovery, rebreather preparation, and analysis for the following day.
A second, shallower dive may occasionally be possible, but it is not assumed.
Gas, open-circuit and rebreather support
Gas support
Air, nitrox, oxygen, helium-based mixtures, decompression gases, diluent and bailout gases. Gas requirements must be submitted before the trip; helium, oxygen and specialist blends are charged per the confirmed quotation and actual configuration. All cylinders must be in test and suitable for the requested gas and pressure.
Open-circuit
Twinsets, stage and decompression cylinders, 7-liter and S80 cylinders, regulators, oxygen-clean equipment where required, gas analysis, DPVs, weights and additional hardware. Configurations and valve types must be agreed before arrival.
Rebreather
Oxygen and diluent fills, bailout cylinders and planning, Sofnolime, limited JJ-CCR equipment and spare-part support; JJ-CCR units by special agreement. Complete rental requires unit-specific certification, documented recent experience, availability, configuration review, checkout and separate terms. Not supplied as an introductory experience unless part of a course.
DPV diving
DPVs can provide access to larger areas and reduce unnecessary work during suitable dives. DPV use requires relevant training or documented experience. Divers must be comfortable with team positioning, speed and depth control, tow-cord and trigger management, gas planning with a DPV, failure procedures, and towing another diver where relevant. A checkout dive may be required before using rental DPVs on a demanding site.
Surface support and emergency planning
Before technical operations, we establish team and surface roles, communication procedures, oxygen availability, lost-diver procedures, emergency contact information, evacuation considerations, and boat pickup and fallback locations. Conditions, team readiness or equipment problems may require the objective to be changed or the dive cancelled.
